Candida Albicans: An Honorary Four Letter Word

Candida should be an honorary four letter word.

Let me tell you why.

Our microbiomes (mostly located in the large intestine and on our skin) are made up of trillions of microbes like yeast, viruses and bacteria.

In an ideal situation they all coexist in a balanced state inside of us.

Unfortunately, this isn't always the case.

Recently more and more people are finding they have major imbalances among their yeast and bacteria inhabitants and these people are suffering the unnerving symptoms.

This imbalance in the microbiome is also known as dysbiosis

One particular form of dysbiosis can occur when a particular type of yeast, called Candida Albicans, becomes overgrown and overpowers the healthy bacteria.

This can result in a condition now known as Candida overgrowth.

I guarantee you or someone you know has struggled or is currently struggling with Candida.

How do you know if you have it?

Typically people find out they have Candida when they start to experience symptoms like recurrent vaginal or oral yeast infections, itchy anus, ear infections or chronic sinus infections.

Some people experience extreme fatigue, joint pain, brain fog or skin rashes like eczema and psoriasis.

Though, these are certainly not all the ways Candida can present, they tend to be the most obvious.

Other people have health concerns that seem completely unrelated like blurry vision, anxiety or nutrient deficiencies.

Doesn’t sound fun right? It’s not.

Hence the four letter word designation.

Take this quiz with questions from the Restorative Wellness Solutions Candida Questionnaire to see if Candida might be the culprit to your mysterious health issues.

*Have you, at any time in your life, taken "broad spectrum" antibiotics for respiratory, urinary, or other infections (for 2 months or longer, or in shorter courses four or more times in a one year period?)

*Have you, at any time in your life, been bothered by persistent prostatitis, vaginitis or other problems affecting your reproductive organs?

*Have you had athlete's foot, ringworm, "jock itch" or other chronic fungus infections of the skin or nails?

*Do you crave sugar, bread or alcohol?

*Do you experience chronic constipation, diarrhea, bloating or vaginal discharge?

If you answered yes to any of these questions or have experienced any of the symptoms mentioned above, you could have Candida overgrowth.

There are a variety of tests available for Candida overgrowth, but Candida is tricky.

It can evade testing and still be a major issue for someone.

This is why I use a comprehensive stool analysis test (GI-MAP) AND the full Candida Questionnaire from Restorative Wellness Solutions in my practice.

If left to proliferate, Candida can progress to your heart and ultimately cause death.

Now, I haven’t met anyone who has had this experience, but I have known some people to have devastating consequences of leaving Candida to flourish unchecked in their bodies.

Candida overgrowth is near and dear to my heart as I have had my own health journey around this issue.

From personal experience, I can tell you this is not something you want to DIY.

Candida overgrowth is not going to go away because you cut out sugar or because you started taking a probiotic.

Beating Candida takes a targeted and calculated multi faceted approach.

I highly recommend working with someone who has the education, tools and resources to help you.
