How Gut Health Impacts Your Skin (And the Hormone-Balancing Carrot Salad I Recommend)
Have you ever noticed that your skin breaks out when you eat more sugar than usual?
Or looks a little blah after a night with wine?
Maybe you get those pre-period pimples?
There’s a reason for that.
Our skin is the largest organ in our body.
It protects us from the outside world, keeps the good stuff in, and helps us detox what our liver and kidneys can’t handle alone.
We even release waste through our pores. (Think body odor and sweat).
So when something is off internally, your skin will often be the first to raise its hand and let you know.
But your skin is not the root issue…
It’s a mirror.
A reflection of what’s going on inside your body, especially in your gut.
Sometimes, I work with clients who are laser-focused on their digestion.
They are dealing with heartburn, constipation, Candida, or bacterial overgrowth.
Skin isn’t even on their radar.
A few weeks into our work together, they’re glowing.
They didn’t expect it, but their skin clears up, the texture smooths out, the dullness fades.
That’s when they realize: ohhhh, this goes deeper than skincare routines.
This is about healing from the inside out.
Here’s what could be going on under the surface:
If you’re not digesting fats well, your skin might be overly dry or overly greasy.
If your liver isn’t working as efficiently, you might see discoloration or uneven skin tone.
If you have yeast overgrowth like Candida, you might notice eczema or skin rashes.
If your hormones are out of balance, especially estrogen, you might be dealing with breakouts.
One of the simple tools I use with clients to gently support hormone balance (and clear skin) is a raw carrot salad.
This recipe was popularized by Dr. Ray Peat, a biologist who studies hormone health.
According to Dr. Peat, raw carrots contain a special fiber that binds to excess estrogen and helps your body eliminate it safely.
If you’ve ever struggled with things like cystic acne, heavy or painful periods, bloating, PMS, fatigue, or low libido…
Excess estrogen could be playing a role.
Here’s the recipe:
Estrogen Balancing Carrot Salad
Ingredients:
1-2 raw organic carrots
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp unrefined coconut oil
Pinch of sea salt
Directions:
Rinse and shred carrots lengthwise (like little ribbons)
Toss with a drizzle of vinegar and melted coconut oil
Finish with a pinch of sea salt
Enjoy daily for the best results
You can eat this simple salad alone or use it to top your next mixed salad.
It’s not vain to want clear and healthy-looking skin.
When your skin is calm and healthy, your gut probably is too.
This isn’t about perfection or overnight fixes.
It’s about giving your body the tools it needs to do what it’s naturally built to do: restore, rebalance, and thrive.
You deserve to feel good in your body.
Love the skin you’re in.
